How our members enjoy Christmas

Congratulations to our member Denise, who won our Christmas giveaway.

What really caught our hearts was the way that Denise and her family celebrate Christmas.

We do the usual things at Christmas, I cook up a massive storm of usually four meats roasted with ham, and have plenty of family around.

But there are a couple of other things that we do every year that are important to us as a family. One is to find anyone we know who is having Christmas on their own. Now this to us is just NOT what Christmas is about. No one should spend Christmas alone, so we make room if we hear that someone is doing nothing or has no family.

 This is important to us because Christmas time is usually when the suicide rate is at its highest in Australia, and people especially those who live alone, really feel the loneliest.

We also set a special place at the table for my mother who is deceased, and fill the wine glass and all have a toast to mum, who is currently enjoying a huge spread in heaven. Then we talk about how we miss her so much and reminisce about wonderful times we spent in the past.

The other thing we do is for my children. I want them to know how lucky they are and that other kids in this world will wake up on Christmas morning and get NOTHING!

So we make a decision as a family what organisation we will support either in Australia or abroad that will provide a present or food to a family on Xmas day. The kids also chose themselves to put some of their own pocket money towards making Christmas special for a child who has nothing. Christmas to us is all about giving and sharing.

We love the way that Denise and her family capture the Christmas spirit by looking out for those less fortunate.

Christmas Lamb in Red Wine recipe:

4 carrots peeled and cut into 5cm pieces

4 potatoes peeled and cut into halves

2 swedes peeled and cut into quarters

3 turnips peeled and cut into halves

2 whole onions peeled

1 cup of pumpkin, cut into 5cm blocks

1 5-7kg leg of lamb

2 cups of red wine

Grease a large oven dish. Place all the vegetables on the bottom of the dish.

Pop the leg of lamb on top

Pour over the red wine (I usually use something Italian that I can’t pronounce; it works well!)

Bake for 2-3hours and bellissima!
