Our October Member Update is brimming with good news for you. We’re launching a new dental network to pack greater value into your extras cover. And we’ve got some important programs to help members with chronic illness to feel better and avoid hospital.
A new network to make you smile
From 1 October Defence Health members can access the Smile.com.au network of dentists. Smile is a dental plan that gives members access to dental care at reduced fees. All members with any level of extras cover will save a guaranteed minimum of 15% off the usual dental fee for all treatments performed by any network dentist.
And members with Premier, Value or Top Extras and those on the ADF Total Package, can receive no-gap on preventive dental by using our dental network (within limits). There’s more reason than ever to consider upgrading or adding extras cover to your policy.
With a national network of more than 1,000 dentists across Australia, we’ve got you covered. Search for your nearest dentist at defencehealth.com.au/dental
Our dental network is another way we’re bringing better value to you and your family. Click here for more details on what you get with our new dental network.
It’s not very nice to think about, but our mouths are full of germs. The bacteria can form plaque which causes tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease. Researchers have found that advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can cause tooth loss and is linked to other serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, pneumonia and diabetes.
Given this potential link, prevention of gum disease is an important step in maintaining overall health.
Brushing your teeth thoroughly, twice a day, helps to remove plaque. Flossing helps remove the plaque caught between your teeth.
A balanced diet, with limited snacks can also reduce your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease.
Make sure you have a regular dental check-up too. A professional clean at the dentist will help remove the hardened plaque (tartar) that you can’t remove with floss or a brush.
The following can be early signs of gum disease. Tell your dentist if you experience:
- bleeding, red, or swollen gums when you brush or floss
- persistent bad breath
- loose teeth
- a change in your bite or the fit of partial dentures.
Your teeth need to last a lifetime. So make the most of your extras cover and take extra-special care of your teeth.
Protect young teeth against dental injury with a professionally fitted mouthguard. If you’re on our ADF Total Package, Premier, Value or Top Extras, you can get one free dentist-fitted mouthguard for your kids each year. All kids up to age 21 are eligible.
The Little family finds the grass is greener at Defence Health
Sharon and Joe Little and their kids joined as our 1 10,000th membership in May.
Joe and Sharon have always had health insurance. But earlier this year, they decided to scout around for a better deal.
They knew their eligibility to join Defence Health wouldn’t be a problem, as Joe’s father served in the Army for 21 years.
Sharon says her joining experience was extremely easy. “Just a phone call with Maria and we were on our way. The premium structure is much easier to understand than our last fund, with more benefits for less cost to us.”
“We’ve found the staff extremely helpful and friendly,” says Sharon. “Even a provider told us Defence Health is the easiest fund to deal with.”
Thanks for that feedback Joe and Sharon. And welcome to the family.back to top
Holidays and natural disasters
Natural disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and most recently, volcanic eruptions, can’t be predicted.
When travellers with Defence Health Travel Insurance* recently suffered disruption from Indonesia’s Mt Raung volcanic ash cloud, our travel insurance partner, Allianz Global Assistance, worked towards minimising the impact.
The ash cloud stranded thousands of holidaymakers in Bali as flights were shut down. A number of people had additional accommodation costs and living expenses, as well as missing important events while stranded.
The Allianz Global Assistance Team handled claim notifications ranging from flight delays and cancellations, to extended stays for pets waiting for their owners to come home.
The Australian Government recommends you take out travel insurance before you head overseas. Because if you’re uninsured you are personally responsible for covering any medical or other costs resulting from unexpected incidents or accidents. And before you leave, check for any travel alerts from your insurer which could impact your cover.
Defence Health Travel Insurance has a flexible excess and competitive price – including a discount for the ADF and Defence Health members. It has unlimited overseas emergency hospital and medical cover as well as cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits*. Don’t leave home without it.
We’re committed to making a positive difference to the health of our members. So we’re very excited to announce an expansion of our Health Programs. The programs help invited members with serious health challenges to achieve better health, wellness and quality of life.
We’re partnering with Remedy Healthcare, a provider of highly targeted, successful, evidence-based programs to deliver telephone based chronic disease and risk factor management programs.
While not all members will participate in these programs, all members will benefit from the overall health impact on our membership and the lower number of avoidable hospital admissions. That’s because lower hospital and medical costs reduces the pressure on premiums.
Telephone consultations take place over a four to six month period, with each member dealing with a dedicated clinician. The programs are individualised and they achieve life-changing results, with 95% of people reporting that they feel more confident to manage their health after taking part in a Remedy Healthcare program.
The Health Programs will help members with:
- Chronic heart disease
- Lung disease
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Osteoporosis and bone health
- Risk factor management
- Rehabilitation in the home
- Hospital in the home
- Falls prevention and safety in the home
- Complex and integrated care
Participation in our Health Programs is by invitation only. If we think you could benefit, we will be in touch. To find out more about the programs, visit defencehealth.com.au/healthprogramsback to top
Overseas purchases and your cover
Everyone loves a bargain, and the internet is full of them. However if you buy optical frames or medical appliances online, from a company that is not an Australian registered provider then treatment has not been provided in Australia. This means we can’t pay a benefit for your purchase.
It’s the law, and it applies to all health insurers. The same rule applies for any dental work or other treatment performed overseas.
If you’re not sure about your online supplier give us a call on 1800 335 425 or send us an email[email protected] and we’ll check them out for you before you buy.
For the best optical and dental benefits – and professional care – we recommend you visit one of our network providers.
